Immigration To New Zealand

Immigration Categories

There are two categories:

1.Skilled Migrant Category

New Zealand welcome people wanting to work in their country. They welcome people with skills which they need . New Zealand is looking for people who’ll help them to achieve sustainable growth and contribute to an innovative workforce. The category of work permit will depend upon the  reason you want to go to New Zealand, the skills you have to offer, and how long you want to stay.

New Zealand offers many opportunities for skilled migrants, particularly in industries and regions expressing growth and skill shortages. The Skilled Migrant Category has been designed to give priority to meeting those needs and opportunities.

To be considered under this category you need to meet certain prerequisites like; good health, good character, reasonable standard of English, and be under the age of 56 years. In addition you also need to meet the threshold of 100 points to register an ex-pression of Interest.

The Skilled Migrant Category points system allows ex-pressions of Interest to be ranked so that NZIS can invite those who have the most to offer New Zealand to apply for residence. You qualify for points if you have an offer of a job, or are currently employed in New Zealand in work that NZIS consider skilled employment. Work experience, recognized qualifications and age also qualify for points. And you can qualify for bonus points for employment in specific industry areas, employment outside Auckland and qualifications gained in New Zealand. The total points you qualify for determines whether you will be invited to apply for residence. You need to qualify for at least 100 points.

People who score highest under NZIS points system may be invited to apply for residence. The invitation cut off points keep on varying every month. For example these were 180 in April and 160 in May, and 155 in June 2004. The Points system has been explained separately.

New Zealand has opportunities for all.

In New Zealand every region has something unique to offer to the investors. There are 76 agencies around New Zealand that promote growth in their regions and strong regional alliances. They’re part of an organisation called  EDANZ which promotes economic development, business growth and export opportunities. To keep its good standards and reputation, New Zealand has some definite rules and requirements.

You can be granted residence under the Investor, Entrepreneur, or Employees of Relocating Business categories. New Zealand has also another business category- The Long Term Business visa- that is the temporary entry category intended to lead to residence under the Entrepreneur Category after three years. People wanting to establish a business in New Zealand can be granted a Work Permit under the Long Term Business Visa policy and apply for residence under the Entrepreneur Category after three years. Priority areas are the occupations where New Zealand has a shortage of skilled people throughout New Zealand. These  are sustained and ongoing shortages, not just temporary or seasonal ones. The Priority Occupation list identifies the occupations, details of  qualifications and experience which you will need. There is particularly strong demand for the following  priority occupations:

  • IT (systems, project managers, policy planners, technical advisors)
  • Health and medical (eg rural GPs, radiologists, pathologists, anaesthetists),
